TOR for 21.2.22 Moist snowpack will refreeze with a surface crust. Localised new windslab on N,E to SE aspects above 800m. Haz Mod

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing moist snowpack will continue to consolidate and refreeze forming a surface crust. Fresh accumulations of windslab will begin to accumulate during the night on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. These accumulations are not expected to be large in extent and localised around corrie rims and the tops of gullies. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: After a cold start to the night the freezing level will rise to around 800 metres by midnight and remain at that level for the forecast period. Overnight snow on strong South-Westerly winds will moderate by daybreak as the winds veer to the North-West and decrease in strength. Observed Weather Influences: A wet and very windy day with the freezing level above the summits in the early morning. As the day progressed the freezing level dropped and showers, heavy at times turned to snow above 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Overnight the snow has gone through a period of instability due to rising temperatures. Fresh avalanche debris noted on an Easterly aspect at 800 metres during field observations. As the day progressed the snowpack consolidated with a surface crust forming at higher levels. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
