Avalanche Activity

Further increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind. The avalanche danger will increase but remain within the current danger level.

The wind will be moderate to strong. The large quantity of fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are being formed by the northwesterly wind will become increasingly prone to triggering. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. The new snow and wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, above approximately 1800 m. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes medium-sized and large natural avalanches are possible. In the regions exposed to a lot of new snow this applies especially.

Snowpack Structure

30 to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen above approximately 1800 m. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. This applies in particular at intermediate and high altitudes and along the border with Switzerland. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls the wind slabs will increase in size from late morning. The snowpack will become unstable over a wide area.

Tendency

The wind will be strong over a wide area in particular along the border with Switzerland. The fresh snow and also in particular the sometimes large wind slabs that are forming over a wide area represent the main danger.
