Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs represent the main danger.

The fresh snow as well as the sometimes large wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, above approximately 2200 m. The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. These avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Below approximately 2200 m medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

15 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2500 m. The strong wind will transport the new snow and, in some cases, old snow as well. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. In particular at elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
