Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Significant areas of windslab will remain on mainly North to East aspects above 900 metres, although this will start to consolidate during the day instabilities will remain. Some large and fragile cornices will exist above these aspects. There will be deposits of windslab at lower levels with better stability. Exposed windward aspects will remain generally scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A more settled day is expected. After a few overnight snow showers it will generally be dry. There will be a strong breeze from the South or South-East. The freezing level will rise from around 600 meter early morning to around 1200 metres late afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Heavy snow showers during the morning eased through the afternoon. Gale force winds were from the South-West. The freezing level was around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snow showers added to the already significant deposits of windslab which tends to be poor of moderately bonded. These can found in many shelter locations with the greatest amounts tending to be on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Some large and fragile cornices exist above these aspects. Below 900 metres there is still a fair bit of snow, but stability is better. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
