Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

New snow and wind slabs from the middle of the week have increasingly settled. Avalanche-prone locations are now to be found mainly on steep shady slopes. Hardly any fractures deeper in the snowpack are to be expected.

As a consequence of solar radiation and the rise in temperatures, the surface of the snowpack has been moistened up to over 3000 m on south-facing slopes and up to around 2600 m on north-facing slopes. With the clear night, a crust will form in these locations. In these altitude zones, even the deeper layers of the snowpack are often already soaked.

Gliding avalanches, including large ones, are still possible. Although these will become more frequent as the day progresses, some may also be released during the night or in the early morning.

Tendency

Trend until Sunday, 14.04.2024

After mostly clear nights with high levels of outgoing radiation, it will be sunny and mild during the day. The zero-degree level will be around 3800 m. Winds will be light, becoming increasingly moderate at high altitudes on Sunday, from the west.

The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease. After the clear nights, rather favourable conditions are to be expected in the early mornings. Each day, the danger of wet avalanches will increase appreciably as the day progresses. Gliding avalanches are expected, including large ones. Although these will become more frequent as the day progresses, some may also be released during the night or in the early morning. Ski tours and hut ascents should be started and finished early.
