Quick report

My morning got a bit derailed, so I made a quick trip up Kendall to salvage my field time. As has been documented, snow depth increases over a crust dramatically with elevation. Within the trees, travel over the crust was thin and frozen tree bombs from the warmup on 2/28 were evident. Depth is slowly increasing each day, however. When we exited, the snow was getting moist near road level due to daytime warming. It was still snowing, but barely. Above the magic number of roughly ~4500 feet, the crust started to dissipate and low-density powder was found that made for enjoyable skiing. Only the couple of dry loose naturals coming off upper Kendall were spotted and they may have been from yesterday. 

Plenty of folks out and about enjoying winter while they can.

 

Weather

In and out of snow showers most of the morning. There were a few breaks in the clouds where we had some clearing, but hard to call them sun breaks. The wind was minimal to non-existent.

Snowpack

I dug in one of the small meadows at the top of Kendall Trees. 4800', SW aspect. 

There is roughly 2 feet of rightside-up and settling storm snow over the 2/27 interface. I was able to get failures just above the 2/27 with compression tests (CT30) and one ECT did propagate on the same layer, but outside the bounds of standard testing (ECTP31). 

The EFC is now 5 feet below the surface and I did not get any concerning failures with deep tap tests or my "deep ect" test.

Avalanche

Spotted a few dry loose avalanches coming out of the steep rocky slopes at the top of Kendall. They likely failed due to snow shedding from trees and rocks.
