Cracking
widespread

Below 8,000' I found a few inches of wet new snow lying above the New Year's rain crust. As I gained elevation, I found a deeper height of new snow, transitioning to fully dry around 8000'. As the height of new snow reached and surpassed 20cm, I found it to be a more cohesive storm slab. While generally shallow, this slab was widespread and reactive above 8000'. 

I found shallow, widespread cracking in the new snow above 8,000'. I was able to trigger a small avalanche on a NE aspect at 8420' easily.

Snowfall was intermittent, up to S2 during my tour. The temperature at 7700' around 11 am was 32°F, and began decreasing around noon. 26°F at 7700' around 1 pm. Sustained light winds from the southwest, occasionally gusting moderate+.

Snowpack

I found 6cm of wet new snow at 7700' around 11 am. Above 8,000' I found 15-25cm of dry new snow in places less affected by the wind. In places near 8,000', sluffing underfoot was easy in places with ~15cm of dry new snow. As the height of new snow increased to ~20cm+, I found the new snow to be showing more strength as a slab.

In a hasty pit, I found 25cm of new snow overlaying the New Year's rain crust. This crust was not capped by snow from 1/1; instead only had new snow from the last 24 hours overtop. This crust was K hard and a great bed surface for slabs and sluffs to slide on. Faceting below this crust was observed on small rounds. I was able to initiate a failure in an extended column test on top of the rain crust. It did not propagate the entire length of the column, but did show the slab beginning to gain strength by propagating across 2/3rds of the column. ECTN4 down 25cm.
