Quick report
A group of 4 went up to Red Cone Bowl this morning before the brunt of the incoming storm. We probed the snowpack as we went and were pleased to find a lack of stiff layers below the skin track and plenty of soft unconsolidated snow. Wind transport on adjacent peaks and ridges was apparent, especially on the Sherwins. Some wind affected snow patches were present on the east ridge above the bowl but isolated in location. We skied the center, lower angle part of Red Cone and besides a mild crust on the upper hundred feet, the skiing was enjoyable so we took another lap. The East Slope provided some great lower angle pow skiing and coverage was seemingly deep above 9,500 ft. No signs of instability were observed along our route however there were many previous tracks in the area which provided some reassurance we had chosen terrain and timing wisely. Things will obviously change after this storm cycle as 40-50 mph gusts were kicking up at the ridge upon our descent back towards the lakes around 1 pm.
