A variable but fun day to say the least. Ridge-line winds remained strong over much of the day but wind directions flip-flopped at different points in the valley. Wind was loading Holy Diver (Southeasterly) while it also ripped down towards Chair Peak Lake from Melakwa (southerly) and up towards Bryant (southwesterly) matching the changing flow aloft with the approaching storm. Snow came off and on, with unexpected sun breaks and lots of graupel. Visibility deteriorated over short periods but improved markedly after 20-30 minute windows as cloud systems moved through. Breakable crust down the N side of chair, some remaining solar crust any sun affected slopes, but Bryant was the highlight and had stayed safe from wind loading and snow had remained in good condition.
Avalanche
Old wet loose debris throughout the zones and under most rock bands from the late week warm up. Largest was D2 in size just above Melakwa Lake. Also, observed what appeared to be a widely propagated crown below 2 point releases on the S side of Kaleetan that we saw in some of the light. Loading up towards Melakwa was the touchiest where we saw cracking beginning to set up. We avoided it but the snow under the cornice lookers left of the Melakwa Pass was heavily loaded.
