Quick report

Many small loose snow avalanches. Mostly at lower elevations and at canyon mouths nearer to the desert. Cloud cover was less at canyon mouths than nearer the Sierra Crest.

Very light north winds 11,000' and below. No blowing snow observed from a distance over the higher peaks. Cloud ceiling around 12,000 to 12,500'

Snowpack

Below treeline: Total snow 100 to 150cm (three to four feet). New snow from the past 24 hours: 5 to 10". The new snow was not cohesive - no slab character. Boots sank to just below the knee (boot pen 40cm). Skis sank to the ankle (Ski pen 20cm). The layer of concern is the new old interface down 20 to 40cm. This manifests as loose snow instability. Initailly loose dry, but transitioning to a wet snow scenario by late afternoon in areas that recieved sun. I found the 2/14 crust facet complex and the basal facet layer in an E facing profile at 9500' where HS was 145 cm and slope was 20 degrees (open forest). Only structure was evaluated (no stability tests). All snow layers had moisture content (moist to wet) in this location. 4F Rounded facets and rounds less than 2mm at 2/14 layer 100cm down and 4F rounded facets and MF polycrystals down 135cm at the base of the pack (2mm). All other layers are 1F or harder.

Near treeline: Total snow 4 to 6 feet (HS 170 to 230cm). 7 to 10" of new snow (20 to 30cm). Skis sank in to the top of the boot cuff (Ski pen 20 to 30cm). Boots sank in the same. New snow rests on knife-hard wind board on non-southerly aspects. In the upper three feet - 100cm of the snowpack all layers below the new snow are rounded grains between pencil and knife hard. The new snow was not cohesive - no slab character. There is a very fine radiation crust on E facing slopes greater than 25 degrees. Below that the surface snow is moist.

Above treeline: Variable HS: 80cm to deep drifts. The average total snow is about 3ft (1 meter) in non-drifted areas. Coverage of talus fields is still incomplete. 6 to 10" of new snow. The new snow was not cohesive - no slab character. No wind effect whatsoever. No blowing snow. Moist surface snow.
