The Pyramid

Left the trailhead around 7:15am. Despite above freezing temps, clear skies allowed the top 2-3” of the snow surface to refreeze overnight in open terrain. Anywhere from 6-18” of wet snow exists below last night’s crust on east through south aspects. Some low and mid elevation southerly slopes were completely isothermal. I observed a 3” crust with dry snow below on a north facing slope at 9,500’. Surfaces began to soften as soon as they were impacted by the sun. East facing slopes became wet and unsupportable by 9:30am. “Corn O Clock” was at 8:45am.

I observed little in the way of significant wet avalanche activity from the summit. There was some small wet loose activity that could have been a day or two old around rocky features. I did not see any evidence of wet slab activity. This portion of the Tetons appears to be further ahead in the “transitions towards spring” than areas further north in GTNP. In those areas, a good bit of snow is just beginning to transition. Wet avalanches may be more active in that terrain.
