Quick report

Red Flags
Wind Loading, Cracking

Tuesday, March 22, my partner and I were exploring the Chutelettes on Cardiff Ridge. We expected to potentially see wind slabs as well as new snow old snow weaknesses. We observed wind effected snow, though no proper wind slabs. Around the trees and rocks, the snow was faceted and rotten. Ski cuts on multiple lines yielded no results.

The most concerning observation occurred due North just under 10,000’ approaching Cardiff Ridge near Tetris. My partner had a 10 foot propagating crack with failure approximately 18 inches down on new snow old snow interface while booting up. This felt fairly localized to the sheltered terrain in the leeward side of the cliff.
