Headed up into the sandbox in gulf of slides for sunrise this morning. We chose this area as the destination for our tour as we wanted to manage our long sliding fall risk given the crust that had developed. In the sandbox we found 3 inches or so of moist cream cheese like snow on top of a melt freeze crust, there was good bonding occurring between these two surfaces. Below the crust, it seemed as though the recent warm up consolidated the snowpack into a now moist layer that lacked the ability to propagate. Upon seeing the promising snow conditions here, and great visibility above treeline, we decided it was appropriate to head over to Washington with the plan of skiing the east snowfields and right gulley. The east snowfields were a mix of the melt freeze crust that was edgeable and pockets of dry snow ranging from 2-6 inches deep. These pockets bonded quite well and did not show any signs of instability. We paused above right gulley to let the snowpack absorb plenty of sun before our descent. The sun had a great effect on Corning up right gulley, upon descending around 1:30pm, the melt freeze crust had completely melted and we experienced a stable, springlike snowpack.
