Tuckerman Ravine

Fog made for little to no visibility in Tuckerman Ravine today. Less than ½ inch of wet snow had collected in isolated areas, and overall there was barely a trace of snow on top of a solid, frozen bed surface. Temperatures were around 34 degrees due to an inversion layer at 2500 feet and winds were light out of the west. Large chunks of ice were found below the Headwall and Open Book indicating that ice formations in steeper terrain had been falling. Erosion through old avalanche debris from the 12/18/2023 rain event made hiking more challenging on the approach to Lunch Rocks. There was open water, unstable snow bridging, undermining, and ice that was not reliable to walk on. Traction devices were necessary for travel above Hermit Lake.
