Quick report
There was obvious faceting in upper layers of the snowpack near the surface. With dry weather in the forecast (especially clear skies at night that really make the surface snow cold) the faceting will likely continue.
Looking at the crystals under magnification wasn't as helpful as watching how they scatterded across my skis (see video) and my crystal card. What that told me was that the snow was weakening (aka faceting). The good new is that this will keep skiing conditions pretty good. We call it "recycled powder" because as the surface layers weaken, they become loose and ride more like fresh powder. As the faceting continues the skinning may become slippery and the surface snow may also become a little noisy (we also call it "loud powder").
This is not an avalanche problem now. It could become a problem if the process continues and snowfall forms a slab on top. We'll have to be watching the surface snow especially just before the next snow storm.
