Spent some time in the WMR Backcountry today sticking to ridgelines and assessing snowpack stability and quality. Surface melt-freeze crusts exist on all aspects making for difficult downhill travel. Skinned over to Fried Chicken at 13:15 the surface melt freeze crust was almost softened and broken down. By 1430 it was barely noticeable, but surface snow below the surface crust contained a lot of moisture. A light breeze today slowed the breakdown of the melt-freeze crust. Dug a pit at 6415' on a SSW aspect at 1315. Air Temp: 2 degrees C. Few Clouds. Light wind out of the WSW. HS: 145cm Foot Pen: 22cm, Ski Pen: 6cm. CT21 SC 37cm from surface, ECTP25 37cm from surface. The facet layer on the Christmas Crust in unreactive in CT, ECT, and PST. Melt-freeze crust on N aspects is thinner than on S aspects. The snow under surface crust drier than S aspects.
