Quick report
Besides the one crown on Rainbow Mtn, we did not observe any other avalanche activity. We dug two pits at approx. 5,100’ on a NW facing rollover and we’re able to identify three rain crust layers at 50 cm, 120 and 125 cm from base. Total snow depth was 135 cm. ECT test failed after 15 taps on the uppermost rain crust layer with little energy. Snow seemed very well bonded below. Overall we saw variable snow with some wind effect but mostly soft powder skiing. Weather station looked good, and it’s snow depth readings agreed well with in situ probe measurements.
Avalanche
While at the top of the Look Eyrie bowl, at the base of McCallum peak, we observed what looked like the crown of a large slab avalanche on the N face of Rainbow Mountain. Likely caused by rapid wind loading.
