Quick report
As we approached the Sandbox, evidence of two natural avalanches and obvious debris pile. Lots of spatial variability as we skinned up in the trees, some stouter 2” thick wind slab that broke away once piled through, some light 1” wind skins very touchy, other light snow on icy crust. Top of ridge bone dry and either ice or rock. We bailed on heading to Oakes since we were up too late, traversed cautiously to gully 3 and found much firmer but still edgeable wind slab that was nothing like the touchy, reactive pockets we found on the way up in Sandbox. Very bottom of the run in the trees we found a hard-over-soft layer again.
Avalanche
Natural avalanche at top left of Main Gully that had filled back in and smoothed over. Maybe 1’ crown, 30’ across. No debris pile evident in gully, possibly smoothed over by wind and new snow after it slid. Closer to sandbox, one D2R2 natural avalanche from a day prior, crown just below convexity at ridge line. Also filled back in, but debris pile ran several hundred vertical Feet, most of the length of the gully.
