Storm

Strong southwest winds created cornices, wind slabs, and isolated powder pockets on Sunday. We travelled up north-facing terrain and encountered a 1-2" thick (and growing) wind-crust on exposed slopes, and thick powder in more protected areas, all from within the past night/morning. Our group checked in frequently with each other and the snow as we ascended from 8k to around 8,800 feet. Probing with ski poles revealed a consolidated and dense snowpack topped with the wind-crust. Snow got lighter/softer the higher we went. We travelled with caution and spaced far apart. As noted at Victor Creek, stability was dependent on terrain. Our group opted to ski the line we had climbed, not wanting to leave anything to chance. We experienced no instability and very little snow movement on the ski down.
