Quick report
Strange combination of conditions today. Definitely got warm to 8000’ or so. All but the most shady aspects ended up with some sort of temp/sun crust by the end of today. Besides one natural observed- wind slabs were not reactive or cracking on test slopes or ski cuts. We were surprised however at how widespread and varied the wind effect was at upper elevations. Loading seemed to have occurred on north, east, and one west aspect. Old wind slabs were also noted below ridge top and mid path from cross loading as winds funneled through the drainage. We found the best skiing in northern aspects. Some density change perhaps old wind/temp affect has left strong snow on weak snow that was capped with this last bit of new soft snow. (Soft-firm-soft sandwich) We also were surprised to find an area with very cold, very weak snowpack persisting in this shady area. New snow was overlying old windslab and a strong pole plant would leave you hitting facets and rocks at the ground. Unsure how widespread this issue was but it was surprising to find this structure on otherwise protected shady terrain in mid March at 7500’. Clouds in the morning leading to sun and light to moderate south/southwest winds by mid afternoon. Apologies for the lack of pictures!
Avalanche
One small slab approx 6-12” deep and 50-75’ wide released on an east aspect below a cliff band. Crown was still crisp but my guess it ran during or just after our last snow event. East aspect approx 7500’ Numerous natural small dry sluffs running 3/4 path on shady steep aspects at elev 7500-8500’ Rollerballs and small isolated wet loose running near rocky outcrops on solars 7500-8500’.
