The 3" of new snow was not well bonded to itself or the existing firm base and there was a small amount of wind transported snow. There had been no signs of cracking on the lower angle terrain approaching this line and the current weather was warm (~30°) with light NW winds. We were on steep terrain with exposure and several terrain traps. We had not done any snowpack testing, and although we expected sloughing to occur the propagation of this entire slope was unexpected.
Avalanche
Skier triggered avalanche on a NE aspect at ~3900' on a 40°+ slope. The entire slope broke upon ski contact propagating the width of the run. The crown was about 6", which represented the overnight accumulation. The skier was able to steer out of the avalanche path and let it run it's course.
