Todd Lake

Headed to Todd Lake today with low expectations due to high forecasted winds and low coverage. My party and I were met with exceptional conditions and very good coverage considering this year's snowfall so far. We found around 10-13 inches of very low-density snow had fallen by the time we left mid-afternoon which provided for excellent riding throughout the day. I anticipate that conditions will be as good, if not better tomorrow. That being said, coverage on many aspects is still low, and hitting things under the snow should be expected. Earlier in the morning we dug a snow pit on a 27-degree sheltered ENE aspect at 6890 feet. There are several remarkable layers in the snowpack currently which will be good to keep an eye on as snow piles up. Most notably, we found a weak interaction between the new and old snow around 45cm deep on a rain crust which collapsed with propagation at ECTM (13). The sheer of this collapse was poor and the snow did not break off in any kind of slab. However, with the amount of snow falling, on steeper terrain, it could take you off your feet. We also had another layer collapse slightly lower (ECTH) at 60cm which also propagated with lower-quality sheer. Below these layers, the snowpack seems well-bonded and very solid. Have fun!
