Started from the Crater Lake trailhead on Hwy 88 at 12pm. Air temps were in the 50s with sunshine and intermittent high cloud cover. Snow surfaces were soft, wet, dense transitional snow on the way up to the lake. Many wet loose slides were visible in the Crater Lake cirque on all (north, east, and south) aspects. We ascended to the bowl above the northwest side of the lake and found that snow on southerly aspects and previously wind-affected snow was somewhat more consolidated than that on polar aspects, with <1" of ski penetration. These slopes still skied reasonably well throughout the afternoon, and were pretty supportable, though we also mostly stayed to slope angles <30 deg throughout the day. By 530pm east aspects on the descent back down to Hwy 88 were shaded and already starting to form a breakable crust, even though the air temp remained in the upper 40s or low 50s.
