Quick report
- Cracking
- isolated
Toured up to 10,000 feet. Warmer temps and wind have settled new snow, especially in exposed areas. Middle elevations above 8500 feet had noticeable wind-affect in exposed areas. In a SE facing gully around 8700 feet we had some localized cracking at a small rollover and were able to trigger a very small, shallow windslab about 8 inches thick. Did not run far due to the nature of the terrain.
Hand shears produced moderate results - not very planar but not hard either - and were failing in new snow just above the 3/21 interface/crust on E/SE aspects. This density break in the new snow was where the small wind slab failed.
We followed a group up and were about an hour behind them and the skin track had mostly filled in where it was exposed to the wind.
