Lower Green Butte Ridge climbing conditions

Surfaces above treeline have been scoured by the recent winds, leaving behind a large, inconsistent patchwork of wind scabs and icy ridgelines. Near and above treeline, patches of snow are gradually softening, with a slight melt-freeze surface forming on steep, sunny, wind protected slopes. Slopes that hold a hint of shade or wind-chill, are much less likely to soften. Below treeline, surfaces consist of breakable crusts, and creamy snow. 

The Green Butte Ridge climbing route has consistent snow/ice coverage and very little exposed rock to navigate. Rime ice exists on the upper portions of the route and poses a significant overhead hazard. Firm conditions will make for secure traction and climbing purchase. However, slide-for-life conditions do exist, and self-arrest skills are necessary. Glissading is not an option at this time.
