Only sign of instability prior to this was some cracking on a small leeward slope. About 10cm’s of new snow. Clear sky’s with light wind in the basin and moderate wind up high. Hey dude! Wanted to run our observations by you and see if you’re seeing similar things. We dug a pit at the bottom of the first shot. Didn’t do grain ID just CT, ECT and layer ID. Here were our results: SE 3950’ total snow depth was 280 on the probe. We dug down 85cm’s before it was too hard to shovel. From the top down 85-65 fist hard (new snow), 65-62 pencil hard melt freeze layer, 62-52 fist hard layer, 52-22 four finger hard, 22 to bottom knife hard CT3 10cm down SP broke on the melt freeze, CT22 62cm down SP ECTP 3 10cm down, ECTP 23 62cms down Cautious travel. Stability seems poor.
Avalanche
We went up into the Mount Diamond basin intending to look at the Stairway couloirs. We dug a pit at the bottom of the first shot. Due to touchy pit results we bailed on skiing the couloir. We skinned back the way we’d come and then up above us about 20 meters just to ski a little apron. First rider down triggered this slide but was not buried or caught. SS-ASr-D1.5-R1-O
