Quick report
While driving from Leavenworth to Blewett Pass, the weather started as very light snow in town, turned to freezing rain just below the pass, then became rain at the trailhead. As we travelled into Tronsen non-motorized area, the rain let up, and eventually switched to very light snow. Winds were moderate throughout the day, but not strong enough that we were concerned about deadfall in the burned areas. We saw more blue sky and sun as the day progressed. Moist surface snow transitioned to dry snow between 5k and 5.5k. We saw minor wind transport of surface snow, but it did not seem like enough surface snow was available to form fresh wind slabs. Slopes with sun exposure had varying surface crusts. Hand shears and skin track tests suggested buried surface hoar was present on the north facing slope we ascended. We dug a quick pit at 5.5k and that indicated the same thing. Test results were CTE (Q2) and ECTN12 down ~20 cm on ~2mm surface hoar. HS 130 cm. It was sunny on our ski out around 1 pm.
