Quick report
Arrived at Marble Mtn (2600') at 5:00 AM. Moderate steady rain from 5:00-7:30 AM. After that, light rain on and off all day. Dug my first pit at 4300' on a small 25 degree slope (SE aspect) on a ridge. There was 8-12 inches of new snow that was saturated with rain. Below that were several thin ice layers overlying a deep bed of granular spring-like snow. No obvious weak layers. By 4500' there was a thin frozen rain layer on the surface. Visibility was very poor (fog and flat light) and there was a 20 mph wind above 4500'. All climbers today turned around between 4500-5000' so there are no observations from higher than 5000'. Part of my decision to turn around was based on my reaching some short steep sections on the route where even a very small avalanche would dump climbers into the adjacent canyon. The rain-saturated snow over ice layers on those steep slopes did not feel reliable under my snowshoes.
Avalanche
One fresh big cornice failure at 4800. Several crowns seen on steep SE slopes just above 5000' but they may be a day or more old.
