Around 2 feet of new snow in this area since late Sunday night. Snow rates were around 2 inches/hour. Winds were blowing the new snow around with limited visibility.
Snowpack
With many highway closures and unplowed trailheads, it was difficult to find a location for field observations today. We ended up at Schallenberger Ridge to monitor storm slabs today. Around 2 feet of snow has fallen at this location as of this late morning. We had consistent snow surface cracking around 1 foot deep throughout our tour in mostly wind protected terrain and all our travel involved slopes that were well under 30 degrees in steepness with no steeper slopes overhead. We did not make it up into more exposed wind loaded terrain. Snow coverage at elevations below 7000' is improving, but this new snow is covering up many obstacles that are now just covered up and easy to collide with.
