West Seeley

As is the trend, there is thin coverage in most areas. And as the west end of the Seeley zone generally gets more snow, we suspect the east end has even less coverage. The groomed road up from the Boyscout trailhead is generally well covered; non-groomed roads are accessible as well but lots of rocks and brush are exposed. As we rode on south facing, middle elevation roads that were more exposed, small bare patches appeared and snow was actively melting. 

As for the slopes, there is not enough snow at lower and middle elevations to effectively ride without risking damage to your sled. You may be able to get to better riding at upper elevations but keep an eye out for unstable conditions that indicate a persistent slab problem.

At lower and middle elevations, the snow is very thin on all aspects. South and sunny aspects are characterized by about 1 foot of snow and a stout melt-freeze crust on the surface. North aspects are slightly deeper - an average of 2 feet of snow - and the snow is faceted and loose. We noted widespread and well-developed surface hoar in open areas. We were unable to get to upper elevations today but we suspect conditions to be similar to other upper elevation zones where the snowpack is a bit deeper on north and east aspects as earlier season snow has held on and developed into depth hoar at the ground. A slowly faceting slab likely sits on top of this weaker snow on these aspects.
