Quick report
In the wake of this weekends Atmospheric River, many destructive avalanches decorated the mountains. I enjoyed the rare treat of good visibility immediately following the biggest avalanche cycle of the year so far. • During my pavement patrol, I observed dozens of slides. All of which I expect to have released on 2/23 or overnight. Some were large, others were very large, and one was historic. • Today's grand prize goes to the Southern Flathead Range. With an undeniably destructive and tremendously impressive slide that reached at least 3/4 of a mile across the Flathead Crest/Sheep Creek Headwall. This deadly beauty appears to have had humble beginnings as a very large wind slab, that battled its way to victory by successfully unstitching and unloading a D4 Persistent Slab in the basin below. It was an honor to observe this magnificent slide! • Visibility of the entire crown was somewhat limited due the crest disappearing behind a ridge in the foreground. I would not be surprised if more fragmented slabs propagated even further toward Felix Peak. • Due to the sheer volume of slides observed today. I won't have the time tonight to add all the individual avalanche event details. I will work on that some time tomorrow. • In this observation, I've selected eight choice photos from the day that will help paint the picture of what kind of action was seen out there today. Enjoy!
