During the morning it was constantly overcast and temperatures were near freezing. Touring on north slopes the wind was Light from the southeast, but I suspect I was sheltered from more Moderate winds.
Snowpack
There was a melt-freeze crust on the surface everywhere that I traveled. Most of the time this crust was supportable. On steep north slopes this crust was much thinner and weaker, dare I say more rideable. I dug a profile on a north slope at 7,400 ft. The height of snow was 240 cm. I did find buried surface hoar 20 cm. beneath the surface, but it did not appear particularly intact, or reactive (no failures in two shovel tilt tests, and only resistant planer fractures in compression tests). I suspect even in this form it is pretty isolated as I didn't find it in any profiles last weak. Similarly, I found the graupel layer that Elliott mentioned on Tuesday and it was unreactive in my profile.
