Went to Devil's Thumb as a participant in the Alaska Avalanche School Rec 1 course. Our carpooling group did not identify signs of new avalanches on the drive south from Fairbanks to Trims Creek. Skinning up the slope, several W/NW aspects along the Canwell Glacier looked icy. Traveling in a group of five to ~5000', we dug two snow pits at roughly 3900'. Snowpit depths were roughly 100 cm and 65 cm to the ground surface. The shallower snowpit (65 cm) showed primarily depth hoar overlain by a wind slab and surface hoar, strength ranging from F at the surface to 1F at depth. ECT X. While skinning up and skiing down, we were able to primarily ski in shallow powder, though there were wind affected regions and exposed rock throughout the slope, too.
