Made a push for Sky Pilot on Saturday. When we topped Gash around 9am things were windy and COLD. As we traversed, we got out of the wind and found soft dry snow in the shade of trees, with a thin melt/freeze crust in open areas. In the bowl beneath Sky Pilot, the snow was a thick wind hammered crust, but on top was a thin layer of wind broken duff. On the decent, you could see the areas to put turns in for good snow. The choke was icy and the top ramp had more thick wind crust with wind duff on top. When we topped Gash until we began our descent, Sky Pilot was capped with a cloud, which lowered our expectations of quality turns on the descent, but miraculously, right as we began to descend, the cloud burned off and we got great views and great turns, as long as we were on the dappled snow. We skied another south facing shot down to the lake in glorious sun-warmed crust - warm enough to ski consistently. As we traversed back to Gash, the snow warmed but never to the point of concern re warming, or seeing any roller balls or wet slides.
