NE 8700'Meiss Meadow (Near Tree Line) HS 130cm Weather: 8/8 cloud cover, Strong SW winds, Blowing Snow (rolling), No precip, Temp at freezing. Results: CT14 SC down 40 cm (Very thin rain crust, 5mm and knife hard) CT16 SC down 70cm ( NSF layer/ Jan 2nd PWL) ECTP14 down 70cm ( NSF layer/ Jan 2nd PWL) PST Arr 60/100 down 70cm AIARE Avy 2 traveled to Meiss Meadow to observe the the snowpack and find good turns. We saw the full spectrum of snow conditions ranging from wind scoured ice to breakable crust, with goopy snow during the exit. Obvious signs of ambient air temp above freezing. We observed two natural avalanches that looked old. We dug a pit near by. Suspected wind load on the Jan 2nd PWL with a cornice fall trigger.
