This weekend while teaching in the Rattlesnake Wilderness behind Snowbowl ski resort. I found veritable conditions due to several days of high winds last week. Only the most protected areas still hold good skiing on the northwest and west-facing aspects below tree line. Pertinent observations: • Hazards on the surface like falling trees and stiff wind lips. • Inconsistent snowpack test results due to high spatial variability from strong winds. • East aspects were very difficult and dangerous to ski due to a dense ice crust. • Isolated pockets of fresh wind slab on east and northeast aspects up to five inches deep forming Sunday night no wider than the length of a ski.
