Quick report

The 3/9 surface hoar layer seems to still exist at middle elevations on northerly aspects. The layer could be seen in two quick pits on a northerly aspect of Big Chief Mountain around 5,500'. It was buried about 30 cm deep and a quick ECT produced an ECTN result. I dug a more profile pit on an E aspect at 5,600'. Of interest this snow profile in full sun, which did not freeze last night, had no water percolating or pooling in the snowpack. See the attached photo for the full pit profile and stability test results.

Avalanche

Large D2+ WL avalanches could be seen on the W Face of Big Chiwaukum from very far away.
