Keokee Peak- Selkirk Mtns

Good visibility and mild temperatures made for a good tour today. High clouds were present all day. That combined with relatively cool temps made little to no change to the snow surface. Winds were calm with no transport even though there’s plenty of snow to transport. The storm slab is right side up which made for a supportable surface.

I didn’t see any signs of natural avalanche activity even though we were skiing near steep terrain and had great visibility of the southern Selkirks. I found the SH alive and well approximately 50 cm’s below the surface. I couldn’t get the SH to fail on multiple hand tests, but we did experience multiple rumbling collapse. There were no signs of SH near the ridges, but easy to find in sheltered areas 5000-6000’. Even though there’s concern in the snowpack structure, I found it to be stubborn to failure. If a snowmobile or skier finds the right spot to trigger an avalanche, it could be large enough to bury or kill a person and run long distances.  You could safely ski and snowmobile today by being aware to managing the slope angle and stay off of slopes over 30 degrees.
