Quick report
Took a quick ride to investigate the snow in the western part of the Canyon Creek zone before the incoming storms. Snow began around 2,000’, we parked at 2,500’. Partly sunny skies at 12:30pm quickly became completely overcast with fog obscuring upper elevations. Snow height really began to increase at 3,500’. There was little wind effect where we traveled. The old crust could very much be felt under the new snow. The new snow certainly helped to freshen everything up, but it is still very early season conditions (lots of creeks and willows). At 4,300’ the snow depth was 75cm. The top 40cm was new, right side up snow. Below that was a stout 5cm crust, from there to the ground was consolidated, moist snow. We observed surface hoar in areas that did not have tree cover above 3,500’.
