In addition to the small wind slab up high, we dug a hasty pit on a NNE aspect at 5200’ on the S ridge of W goat. Highlights: HS 250cm, and both crust/facet layers were much closer to the surface (down 55cm) than in recent pits in the Bagley Basin. There were faceted layers above and below each of the two crusts, and we observed a sudden planar fracture on moderate taps from the elbow (CTM SP) down 55cm within the uppermost faceted layer above the top crust. These results kept us off North aspects, a decision made easier by stellar boot top powder on S and E aspects even on a sunny afternoon with no evidence of surface warming.
Avalanche
R1D1 Hard Slab at 6500’ caused by wind loading, wind slabs were localized to small pockets on the south ridge of W. Goat and easy to spot.
