Crystal Lakes and Morse Creek

Today was very similar to springtime touring but without the long hours of daylight.

The surface snow varies by aspect and exposure to sunshine. As we explored different aspects and elevations, we encountered a full range of conditions, including firm, breakable crust, punchy conditions, hot pow, and something resembling drier snow. Settlement cones and snowy trees in valley bottoms were visible evidence of this past week's weather that has helped to consolidate and on some aspects, thin, our early-season snowpack. Exposed rocks and shallowly buried trees are still scattered throughout the terrain, especially on true southerly aspects.

We did find some colder, drier snow on shaded northerly slopes to help redeem a day that otherwise provided poor skiing conditions. Unfortunately, we paid a price for these "drier" turns by having severely clumped-up skins during our ascent. Very springlike.

The snowpack appears to be in great shape. It is right-side-up and lacks major layers of concern. Although weak snow was found near the surface from this week's cold clear nights, the distribution was much spottier than I had anticipated when I left the house this morning. Seems like the warm temps have gotten to most slopes except the shadiest of northerly aspects.
