Quick report

Sled/ski of Mt. Marston.  

  • We found a modest amount of windloading at the ridgetops, and crossloading on SE slopes.  
  • It seemed like the winds must have stopped before the overnight snow as there was 4-5 inches of new on all aspects and all elevations above 5500'.
  • The warm up from sunday produced a MF crust on any slope that was able to see the sun.  Shaded aspects were saved and didn't have the crust.
  • We did not see any eveidence of natural avalanches from the weekend.
  • Our pit on a NE aspect still showed reactivity in a PST.  The weak layer we tested was the Mid Jan crust that was down 70 cm.  It was easily defined as a thin ice layer with large (2-3mm) facets below it.  
  • Overall I don't think it got as cooked by the sun over the weekend as Peters Ridge in the Swan Range had.
Things seemed pretty stable. No natural activity or instabilities in our pits.

Nice sunny day, shaded aspects stayed cool, solar aspects didn't turn into mashed potatoes.

Snowpack

  • SE pit at 6900'  had ECTX with the new 3/12 crust down 5 inches. 
  • NE pit at 7300' had ECTX, however, when we tested the mid Jan crust down 70 cm in a Propogation Saw Test we had unstable results (PST 20/100 END).  The layer beneath the crust is 3 cm thick and composed of 2-3mm facets.  It was easy to ID as the facets pretty much fell out of the pit wall.
