Wanted to see how water was moving through the snowpack on south aspects around 2pm. Dumped some Tang on the snow surface and waited about 20-30 minutes then made a clean pit wall. It looked like an old ice crust was stopping vertical movement of the liquid water. This layer was about 8-10 inches deep. Also, there were shallow runnels forming on the snow surface.
