Quick report
Today, we went to Skyland in hopes of cutting off amount of walking/riding through the rain. Unfortunately, our ride in was wet, and our ride out was wet.
- Observed no signs of instability and no recent avalanche activity.
- New snow depths increased to 3 to 4 inches at roughly 6200 feet.
- Winds were actively transporting snow, but we didn’t observe any signs of instability in freshly drifted snow.
- Rain levels were at 5600 feet at the start of the day and dropped a couple hundred feet by the end of the day.
The warm temperatures are certainly helping the snowpack gain strength.

Could cover varied between obscured and overcast. Temperatures were warm. Light rain throughout the day. Rain line was at approximately 5600 feet.
Snowpack
Dug two snow pits.
- 7000 feet on a northeast aspect: We found a surprisingly strong snowpack that lacked weak layers and crusts. I'm not entirely convinced this snowpit is representative of the upper elevation snowpack in this location. ECTN down 10 inches.
- 6200 feet on an east aspect: We found a buried layer of facets and got propagating snowpit tests with hard force. The weak layer was approximately 2 feet below surface.
