We trenched into Pinnacle Creek to troubleshoot the Tunnel Snow station, which quit reporting the morning of 3/21.* 

  • It snowed. All. Damn. Day. Varying intensity - S1 to S5. Sometimes really big flakes. At the end of the day, my ski bases were snow covered 5 minutes after I tossed them in the truck bed.
  • Probing with ski poles showed about a meter of recent snow above the most recent hard surface. Thigh deep stepping off the sleds at 4900 ft. 
  • Ski penetration while trail breaking was mostly calf deep, sometimes knee. 
  • We saw almost no blowing snow at mid elevations. Very little wind effect on the mid elevation ridge where we traveled. 
  • Avalanche activity was mostly small-large soft slabs on leeward, upper-elevation slopes. And loose dry avalanches whose size depended on terrain (D1-D2.5). See avalanche summary/ avalanche events.
  • We fixed the power issue at Tunnel Snow; it's reporting all values accurately as of 1900 on 3/22.

*That also produced output errors at Tunnel Wind, though it was recording accurately. 

Cracks in most recent snow. Never ran more than half ski length.

Valley: In AM, Hwy 2 snow-covered w snow on phone lines. By late afternoon, roads wet, w snow off trees to just under 4000 ft. Snowing in AM; wintery mix in PM. Mountains: 36 hours snow total at least 40 cm, probably more with settlement. Snow showers most of the day, sometimes intense. S1 to S5. Skies overcast and winds light until mid afternoon, when winds picked up and skies partly cleared for ~30 minutes.

Snowpack

  • Up to a meter of recent snow between 5000 and 6100 feet. Dry, soft, and relatively low-density, with a few storm interfaces/ density changes. Cohesive in isolated spots/ after some sun (10 minutes of broken skies made for more slabby feeling snow on the windward/ sunny side of the ridge).
  • Surface snow barely kissed by the wind on the ridge between those elevations. 
  • Small, fresh cornices dropped easily with a ski stomp, but with no propagation.
  • Debris from cornices drops didn't trigger slides except in one case, when the debris ran over a convexity and triggered a D1.5 soft slab (see avalanche events)
  • At low-elevations, recent snow was moist in the morning; borderline wet below 4000 ft by end of the day.

Lots of debris from D1 loose dry sluffs below chutes and rockbands. Several small-large natural soft slabs, mostly in leeward or crossloaded upper elevation terrain. Triggered one small soft slab with a debris from a dropped cornice. Several natural long-running, large loose dry slides in continuously steep southerly paths.
