- Wind Loading, Collapsing, Poor Snowpack Structure
A road walk up Miners Basin demonstrated wind loading on the ridges, poor snowpack structure on sheltered slopes, and low snow coverage throughout. Gusty winds brought intermittent cloud cover and ridgetop snow transport. We skied low angle south- and east-facing slopes below treeline and found a punchy snowpack with widespread whumphing and collapsing. Rocks and deadfall are plentiful.
