Cloud coverage changed over the course of time spent in Huntington Ravine. Entering the terrain at 1000 clouds were scattered and overtime coverage increased to broken and then overcast for most of the afternoon. Western winds also picked up overtime. The combination of higher winds and overcast skies limited some of the solar effect on the snowpack.
Snowpack
Entering the terrain just after 1000 the surface snow was beginning to soften and moisten due to the solar effect. After finding an isothermal snowpack in Oakes Gulf yesterday in a southwest aspect, wanted to compare an eastern aspect. Snow height was 108 cm at an elevation of 4190 ft. Found the snowpack to be isothermal in this location as well. Observed skiers in the ravine with minor sluff, about 1.5-2 inches thick, in steeper sections.
Solar effect was not as strong today as the overcast skies and strong winds negated the warming effect of ambient air temperatures. While the snowpack had softened, it was not softening as deeply as it had yesterday.
A hazard that we looked for was falling ice and was mindful of that in travel. We did not observe any ice falls in Huntington Ravine. Also talked with numerous parties in Tuckerman Ravine and they did not observe any ice falls either.
