Avalanche Activity

An appreciable danger of slab avalanches exists. From late morning, moist snow slides are possible.

In particular in the regions exposed to precipitation more medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches are to be expected as a consequence of the new snow. Here the avalanche danger is considerable (level 3). The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist and wet avalanches are possible. Backcountry touring and snowshoe hiking call for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snowpack Structure

The old snowpack will be generally moist. The new snow is poorly bonded in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2500 m. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak.
