Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Heavy overnight rain will ease into wintery showers with snow above 900 metres later as the freezing level lowers. Winds will be strong, West-South-Westerly veering West-North-West in the afternoon. The freezing level will be above the summits overnight, gradually dropping to 900 metres by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: The passage of Storm Corrie resulted in storm force winds from the North-West overnight, backing to the West-South-West during the day. There were scattered light blustery showers throughout, these falling as snow above 300 metres initially, but confined to above 800 metres by the end of the period. The freezing level gradually rose from 200 metres to 800 metres during the day. ObservedSnowStability: A superficial dusting of new snow lies above 300 metres. In steep wind sheltered locations shallow accumulations of snow have been deposited due to drifting at higher elevations, these are largely inconsequential. Any remaining patches of old snow are firm and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
