Avalanche Activity

LO for 23.3 Unstable windslab will continue to be deposited, mainly on NW-N-E aspects above 900m. New cornices fragile. Haz Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will continue to be deposited in wind sheltered areas, mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Accumulations gaining depth will increase and become more extensive. Newly formed cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will be generally Southerly, strong during the evening and moderate to strong from midnight onwards. The freezing level will be around 800 metres gradually rising to 1000 metres during the day. Showers throughout the period will fall as snow mainly above 800 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight it was wet with rain at all levels. This changed at 04:00 when the freezing level quickly dropped below the summits to be around 800 metres during the morning and 900 metres through the afternoon. During the day showers fell as snow above around 600 metres. Winds were very strong South-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh unstable windslab continued to be deposited through the day in wind sheltered areas, mainly on North to East aspects above 1000 metres. Areas gaining depth are generally fairly localised. New fragile cornices are building above these aspects. The old snowpack, greatest accumulations of which lie on North to East aspects above 900 metres, is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
